Drinking a cup of coffee (or a few) is part of our daily routine; but have you ever wondered what happens to the burlap sacks in which this coveted bean is exported? Neither did I… until I met Josué and his recycled products. Josué is an upholsterer – an endangered craft – and together with his partner Rosa, they’ve created Arpillera; a brand that, defined by themselves, is a cultural, social and sustainable initiative for the promotion of eco-design and creative recycling.
The philosophy of Arpillera is based on upcycling, a technique that transforms waste into valuable objects; as well as the importance of respecting the planet (and ourselves as its occupants) to produce differently and therefore be able to decide how we consume. Its recycled products are handmade by transforming burlap sack fabric into unique accessories for unique people. Josué and Rosa use the fair trade coffee burlap sack because of its aesthetics, history and the infinite possibilities this material has to be given a second life.
The recycled products that Josué makes are created in a sustainable way in his workshop in Benifairó de les Valls; where, surrounded by Valencian orange trees, they are inspired to continue producing in a sustainable way and under the principles of the circular economy, all with the goal of creating a better world.

In addition to seeking a more sustainable world, Josué and Rosa want to promote the craftwork that is currently in crisis due to the disposable culture. They both love what they do and it shows in the quality of the products, with well done work and attention to small details that demonstrate the care with which they give each stitch and make each one of them.
Arpillera sells much more than just simple burlap sack objects; they are handmade recycled products with a sustainable production process that respects people, the environment and pays attention to everything from the selection of raw materials to the saving of plastic materials or non-ecological adhesives.
To meet Josué, to have the opportunity to talk and work with him, is to know a person who is coherent in his actions. His way of seeing and living life is perceived in each of his products, and the philosophy he has created with Rosa for Arpillera is just an extension of that coherence and his philosophy of life. They are all about consuming less, reusing things and recycling ideas. Josué and Rosa are true ecological artisans who share through their recycled products stories that speak of respect and sustainability.
