This cotton tote bag is made on a backstarp loom, a pre-hispanic technique used by artisans in the highlands of Chiapas in Mexico. The technique consists of small pieces of wood in the shape of two sticks joined by a cloth band that helps the weaver to adjust the loom to her size and comfort.
This band is attached to the artisan; while at the other end is usually attached to a pole, wall, tree or any stable support that allows the structure to stay tense and facilitate the weaving. The space allows the artisans to work freely and create pieces by inserting threads and compacting them using another piece of wood known as a “machete”.
Back strap loom technique that is used to create beautiful pieces is transmitted from generation to generation; preserving the traditions and culture of the area to the delight of locals and tourists.
