A Mexican heart decoration is also known as a milagrito. This iconic craft is known to be used as offerings to ask for a miracle or as a thank you. Normally, these hearts are taken to church with the saint to whom the miracle is asked; but in recent years it has become popular as a home decoration item.
The Mexican heart decoration or “milagrito” is made of tin or brass with bright colors and details that amaze anyone. These Mexican hearts are handmade with pigmented clay and decorated with miniature figures of plants, flowers and butterflies that make it look simply wonderful. Clay, just like pottery, is an earth that contains natural elements and a chemical composition that gives it plasticity; after being molded when wet, when dry it maintains a firm structure that makes it a true work of popular art.
Clay heart decoration by Cecilio Sánchez
The Mexican clay pieces are made in the family workshop of Cecilio Sanchez, a young artisan who stands out in the craft scene for giving a fresh air to his work in clay. His space of inspiration is located north of Metepec, one of the so-called “Pueblos Magicos” (Magic Towns) located in the State of Mexico, Mexico.
His work is different from that of the rest of the artisans in the area who work with clay since, together with his brother Silvestre, they apply the pigmented clay to achieve natural colors in their mosaics, trees, virgins and catrinas. All his pieces are made with great detail, which has earned him several national awards as the obtained in ceramics in 2011 for his work The Life of Jesus, a miniature piece of clay.
Cecilio Sánchez Fierro, a craftsman with an outstanding career. He is the bearer of a millenary tradition that is presented in the technique of pigmented, polychrome and enameled clay; of an admirable beauty, fruit of the culture that makes Mexico an international bastion.
The heart decoration has been bought by Valexico paying a fair price for them, respecting and admiring the work that today is the livelihood of many Mexican families.
