The Day of the Dead is approaching and we can’t help but think of the catrinas, calacas and Mexican skeleton, full of flowers, colors and typical Mexican folklore. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 2, the day of all the dead. This celebration takes place in Mexico and other Latin American countries to commemorate all those friends and family who came before us. This festivity was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2008.

Although this traditional celebration is to remember the dead; those of us who remain in the earthly world are accustomed to put up an offering to our loved ones with all the things they enjoyed in life. In the offering, there are items that include a photo of the deceased, his favorite food and drink; as well as Mexican skeleton and pan de muerto, chopped paper, candles and cempasúchitl flowers; the flowers that help guide the souls of the dead to the other side.

Each region of the country has a particular way of celebrating the Day of the Dead; making offerings with foods typical of the area or commemorating the famous people who lived and died there. But what will always be there will be the Mexican skeleton, which dress up on the Day of the Dead to teach us to celebrate life and honor death. The skeletons sing, dance and play instruments while letting us know that there is life beyond death.
