Some may think it’s a very large key tray and that it’s actually a breadbasket; but you can actually use this woven basket for whatever you want. You can put chocolates at the entrance of your house or hang them on a wall for decoration; your imagination is the limit!

Thewoven basket is handmade with palm leaves, a natural fiber used by Mexican artisans to create all kinds of products, from baskets, bags and ornaments, to bread baskets, hats and these pretty little boxes. The process of making this craft is truly an art; you start by moistening the palm leaf, then cut the edges to leave the narrow leaf and start weaving. The natural palm leaf can be used or dyed with natural pigments to create a combination of special colors for each taste.

Products made with palm leaf, such as this woven basket, are perfect to give as a gift; they are also truly sustainable and ecological products, as artisans use all parts of the leaf for elaboration or decoration. To take care of your palm leaf products it is only necessary to clean them with a damp cloth; also, because of the type of fibre that is the palm leaf it is normal that the colours loses intensity, so we recommend that you do not expose them to direct sunlight to prevent them from losing their colour more quickly.

Woven basket by La casa de las canastas

La casa de las canastas has more than 60 years dedicated to the production of all kinds of products made with palm leaf. From tortilleros, baskets and bags, to coasters, pot holders and decorative elements fill the shelves of the workshop that also serves as a store. David is in charge of the family business and although he knows that there is a lot of competition from similar products made in an industrial way and not in a handcrafted way, he does not lose hope that more people will give value to the handcrafted work they do.

This is why by buying the products of La Casa de las Canastas you are supporting Mexican artisan families who still preserve the traditional technique of weaving with palm leaves and who to this day live off its production and sale.
